When you can no longer run from the people you love, you start wondering where love ends to make way for hate.
I was under the impression that gay characters have to be on their best behavior in Hollywood. The best friend with out-of-the-box yet sensitive words of advice, the extravagant temper, always full of life, or the protagonist of an impossible, tear-jerking love story.
Yet Netflix proves once more that it is oblivious to the norm. The Boys in the Band reveals exactly what Hollywood has been keeping quiet about: LGBT with complex feelings.
So instead of a two-dimensional caricature, viewers get behind the closed doors of the closet, in the 70' when the truth of the heart was taboo and the victims of the norm got the chance to simulate freedom only at low-key, private parties.
This movie is not holding back on anything just for the sake of keeping the audience comfortable. This movie reveals the LGBT members as humans, with their dreams, flaws, wounds, aspirations, desires, fantasies, lofty gestures out in the open. It's raw and it's spectacular.

This remake stays loyal to the original period but the cast of all openly gay actors create an interesting intensity and edge that I feel adds a new dimension to the original work.
Like many films taken from plays there is not a lot physical action but the actors handle the dialogue beautifully creating a great and compelling intensity.
